Feldpost Nummer 09964 E (Stab u. 6 - 10 Kompanie II./Pz.Gren.Rgt.GD)
At the time of writing almost all GD units were in quarters in the Melichowskaja - Schachty area North of the Don. Rumours about GD's imminent departure to France abounded, unfortunately for them all this was not to be.
7. August 1942
Liebe Mutti!
Zunächst meinen herzlichsten Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag. Rechtszeitig
wird der Glückwunsch wahrscheinlich nicht ankommen, und ein Geschenk
habe ich auch nicht für Dich. Wenn ich Dir aber schreibe, daß ich noch
gesund bin und daß es mir gut geht, so ist das ja auch eigentlich ein
Geschenk für Dich. Die Postverbindung ist sehr schlecht. Du wirst nicht
allzuviel von mir hören, und wir bekommen auch nicht oft Post. Einmal
kommt das, weil unser Vormarsch viel zu schnell geht und dann weil wir
jetzt weit zum Süden herunter gekommen sind. Ich habe meinen Brief erst
nicht zuende schreiben können. Es sind erst 7 Tage vergangen. Wir sind
jetzt seid ein paar Tagen aus dem Kampf herausgezogen worden, und warten
auf neuen Einsatzbefehl. Unsere Tätigkeit im Süden wird jetzt wohl
beendet sein und alles ist gespannt wo es jetzt hingeht. Du wirst doch
auch sicher von unseren Kämpfen im [Don Bogen] gehört haben. Ich las
gestern im V.B. einen größeren Artikel von Dir. Großdeutschland bei den
ersten Angriffen bis zum Don. Eine große Hitze herrscht hier, heute ist
es[???] wieder 45°C. Du kannst Dir denken, wie wir beim Vormarsch
"geölt" haben. Von den Kämpfen kann ich Dir später einmal erzählen.
Schreiben kann man das doch nicht alles. Ich habe jetzt mehrere
Luftfeldp.Marken. Zwei davon schicke ich Dir mit. Nur einfache Briefe
damit frankieren. Kein Päckchen. Auf ein [frohes] Wiedersehen.

Dear Mum,
Firstly my warmest congratulations for your birthday. These greetings will probably not reach you in time, and I have no present for you either. But if I write that I am still fit and healthy, is that some kind of present for you instead. The mail delivery is very bad you will not hear much from me, and we don’t get mail very often. Firstly because of our very fast advance and secondly because we have gone very far into the south. At first I could not finish my letter, even after 7 days. We have now been drawn back from the fighting for the last couple of days and we are now awaiting new orders. It seems our activity in the south is now at an end and everyone is full of tension about what happens next. You must surely have heard of our battles in the Don Bend. Yesterday I read a large article in the V.B (Volkischer Beobachter) entitled “Grossdeutschland in the first attacks toward the Don”.
A great heat is everywhere today it is 45 centigrade again. You can imagine how we all sweated during the advance. I can tell you about the battles later, it is too much for one to write. I have more airmail stamps now. Two of them I’ll send with this letter, they are only for letters not packets.
