Feldpost Nummer 09964 E (Stab u. 6 - 10 Kompanie II./Pz.Gren.Rgt.GD)

At the time of writing almost all GD units were in Army reserve  AOK9 The battles around Rzhev were on the horizon!

31st August 1942

Dear Mum,

I have already written to you once today. But firstly on my return to the company today I had lots of mail from you, for which I have to thank you. I cooked the red fruit jelly immediately and tucked into it. After that I got 2 Feldpost stamps for 1000g packets. i recovered rather well from my disease. I am not yet perfect, but will be. We are not yet in action, we are about 2KM from the front. There has not been any "Bick Berries" I'll bet that annoys you, nothing to preserve. We constantly have 3 to 4 men on leave, but I don't think I have leave coming soon. I hope we can attack soon and drive the Russians back. It has to be the last he has placed before us.

"Bick Berries" Is perhaps a Joke or Family nickname for some other fruit,

It seems poor Helmut was suffering an illness between these 2 letters (perhaps a bout of dysentry which was very common)

Liebe Mutti!

Ich habe Dir heute schon einmal geschrieben. Aber erstens habe (ich) als

ich gestern wieder zur Kompanie kam allerhand post von Dir bekommen, für

die ich mich bedanken muß. Die rote Grütze habe ich gleich gekocht, und

habe sie mir gut schmecken lassen. Dann habe ich von der Kompanie 2

Zulassungsmarken für 1000kg Päckchen bekommen. Von meiner Krankheit habe

ich ganz gut wieder erholt. So ganz ist es noch nicht wieder, aber es

wird schon werden. Im Einsatz sind wir noch nicht. Wir liegen etwa 2km

von der Front ab. [Bickbeeren] hat es nicht gegeben. Da wirst Du Dich

doch bestimmt geärgert haben. Du kannst man [zuschaun] daß Du irgend

etwas zum Einmachen bekommst. Du weißt ja wenn wir mal auf Urlaub

kommen. Von uns fahren auch immer laufend 3 - 4 Mann auf Urlaub. Ich

werde sobald wohl noch keinen Urlaub bekommen. Hoffentlich können wir

den Russen auch [frisch] bald angreifen und zurücktreiben. Es muß wohl

ziemlich das Letzte sein, was er hier uns gegenüber liegen hat. Doch

jetzzt will ich schließen [???] es grüßt Dich herzlich
